Why is it so hard to play a violin without any instruction?

Such as with a piano… You can make nice sounds and play by ear, but why is a violin so awful difficullllt?!

Because with the violin, there are a million and one things that you can do wrong. When you’re just starting, it is difficult to figure out just which one of those million and one things is making you sound bad. Your teacher, with their greater experience, will know, and be able to help you.

The piano is simpler to get a sound out of.

Book for learning to read Music?

Today I was at a music store and they had an instruction book for learning to play guitar and read the music notes.
On the actual music notes it showed the "letter." (on the little filled in black spot of the note, it would have the letter on there in white.

This was the ONLY book I saw there that was like this. Unfortunatly, the front and back cover was torn off the book, so I don’t know who makes the book. The lines in the store were really long, I had already waited about 10 minutes in two different lines and I still have several people ahead of me. I had to get back to work…

Does anyone know WHO makes this book, such as FASTTRACK or some other music book company? I am looking for the title of this book, and the title of this book of other companies for both guitar and violin for my brother and sister.

If anyone could help I’d be really appreciative!!
Thank you so much!

With so little information, I think it would be hard trying to identify that book. Why not search the internet where you can find FREE lessons?
Check out the soure links I posted below for some examples.
Good luck.

Guitar lessons on YouTube?

So, I know this is cheapskate-ish, but hey, tons of people offer it.

I don’t need step-by-step crap, I’ve been playing violin for years and have taken music theory. I need technical instruction on how to play the guitar.

So, does anyone know of YouTube channels that teach mostly technical aspects of guitar and/or bass guitar?

It could also be from some other video site, but the idea is that it’s free.
Thanks. :)
@dude: I don’t want somebody who spends most of the videos saying "This is called G clef, this is middle C on this line on the staff."
I want "this is how to hold the guitar, make sure your hand is…."
Oh yeah, just general technical stuff, no particular genre.

you go to youtube.com and search: guitar technical aspect lesson. Then you can see the results there…..;)

How do I go about becoming a good violinist?

I’ve played the trumpet from sixth grade through all of high school. I’m currently at the end of my college career (22) and would like to take up the violin.

I come to have a real love for classical music, its power, and its emotion, and I’d love to be able to evoke that emotion onto others. Thus, I feel the violin will be the perfect instrument to help me do this. Once more I’d love to able to play some of my favorite pieces: Meditation, Nearer My God to Thee, Por Una Cabeza, Claire de Lune, and Szomorú vasárnap (Gloomy Sunday).

I understand that this will take time, especially with my future as I am pursuing medical school; thus I feel I should get started.

How can I go about completing this goal in music? What type of violin will allow me to play said pieces and more? Is private instruction critical? Is there any other advice you have for me?

Thank you all for your help!

To complete this goal in music. You need a viollin that is considered an advanced student. To play said pieces and more, Private instruction is critical. Start as soon as possible.
1 Find a good teacher.
2 Get the teachers guidance in selecting an instrument.
3 Practice daily
4 Don’t expect miracles.
5 Enjoy

Korg MA30 metronome- how to get a basic beat?

I’ve just started taking violin lessons and am trying to figure out my new metronome, here are the instructions http://www.korg.com/downloads/pdf/MA30_EFG2.pdf

They’re clear as mud to me-can anyone tell me how to get a basic 4/4 beat?

You will basicly scroll through the options and press your selections. You will be in Metronome mode when you turn on the power. The LCD will cycle through tempo, time signature, and input tap tempo settings each time you press the Metronome switch.

Setting the time signature
1. Press the Metronome switch so that the metronome is not operating. (The pendulum in the LCD will be stationary, pointing left.)
2. Use the up or down switches to set the time signature.
After you set the time signature, press the Metronome switch once to start the metronome.

How do I get into an orchestra/learn to play an orchestra instrument?

(Please read the entire question)
I have attended a few live concerts lately and simply cannot stand not playing any instruments any more. I am in college but my extent of musical knowledge as far as it went was playing the recorder in elementary school. At that time I could read musical notation but it has long since been totally lost on me and I don’t recall it anymore.

I tried the guitar but was unable to move my pinky appropriately to play it, but more so I like the sound of orchestral instruments more. I particularly liked the double bass, but given its large size I’d imagine would be a rather costly instrument and perhaps somewhat unwieldy to a complete beginner. Previously I had never considered wind instruments but I am open minded to all suggestions. I also like the timpani, but again I know those are rather expensive and unwieldy (difficult to transport). Please consider also the starving college student mentality – I can spend a bit on this but I’d rather spend a little and see if I like it before whipping out the big bucks for a better made instrument.

Second to that, how does one get into an orchestra or become involved with getting in one? I have pretty much limited musical knowledge but I’m open to learn it. Do I have any hope since I didn’t come out of high school in band or anything? It’s completely unclear to me how one decides they want to play something like the cello or double bass or violin given no instruction in a high school band – but I don’t know where they learn. I live in a pretty big city so I’m sure whatever it is I have them around here I just don’t know where to look. Is there a place that I can go to that carries a lot of these instruments that would help me in my decision with which to go with?

A side question to those though, can one be in an orchestra as a part time type of hobby thing or is it a full time career? I would want to do this as a part time thing but I suppose if I truly had a knack at something and loved it enough I could drop my current career ambitions and go with music (Hah, I’d have to be what Pavarati is to Opera to a stringed or wind instrument). This is mostly a part time interest, but any help and advice is appreciated. If anyone responding to this is in an orchestra, you have my greatest respect!

First you’ll want to select the instrument you definitely want. You may want to go to a music store and try out a few of their instruments so you know what you like. Also, learning an instrument is quite a commitment and can become really discouraging. You definitely won’t sound like those musicians in the concerts you’ve heard for awhile. Next, find a private tutor – maybe find one of the students from the music program in your college. I’m sure they’d give lessons for an inexpensive price. After awhile (this might take a few years to get good enough) you’ll want to audition for a local orchestra. Each orchestra has different requirements for audition songs and talent.

Good luck! Music is a very rewarding hobby to have – as long as you work on it and don’t expect too much at first.
