Contact the local music stores, they generally have a list of teachers in the area. Also, if there is a Symphony located near you, contact them to see if any members give lessons. Another option is contacting the music department of any University near you. Many students (especially Music Ed) give lessons as a way of making extra money, or need to earn teaching credits, and they are generally less expensive than others.

Its so much nicer to join a class, and then meet someone you feel confident with. Music is special andit takes a special person to teach you. You have to feel at ease with them to be able to learn. You need to be in control employing a teacher straight away may be not the right thing to do. let me know how you do

You should check with the University, or music center, or newspaper advertisement for a violin teacher. You may also check the phone directory.

I have been playing violin for 4 years and I still was never taught vibrato. He doesn’t teach me anything new unless its in the piece I’m playing. He doesn’t give me scales or etudes or any exercises to practice. He just gives me 1 page easy/intermediate level pieces. Is this normal?

Do you think you are improving under your teacher? This is a question you need to ask yourself.Sometimes we grow out of our teachers and this is when the teacher usually becomes uncomfortable about extending you as a player. This is not your fault! We all grow up, and become better! I take it you have not done any violin exams? You could ask him about this (you need scales to do an exam) and approach the subject about what you would like to learn as far as technique, piece, etudes etc. Don’t feel uncomfortable about doing this as he is your teacher and is there to teach you to become better.
