I am in my late 30s. I don’t want to take voice lessons because I think I can become a recorded artist. I just want to do it for my own benefit. If I ask a music teacher this – well of course they will say yes. They want me to hire them! Please be honest. I want to know if the human voice is capable of learning and improving this late in the game. Thanks.

Of course you can! the voice works like a muscle you can always shape it and make your technique better like learning how to manage the air so you can sing longer or stuff like that
and if it makes you happy then you sould definitely go for it

I was on a ventilator for two months and my voice is very low and I get out of breath if I talk a long time or try to sing. I had some speech therapy when I was in the hospital but I still need more. I want to do it by myself. After I built my voice back up I would like to try to give myself voice lessons. Does anyone know of a website where I can find some things that need to do to work on getting there?

I did a quick search, and found nothing by programs they want you to buy, and there’s question about whether or not it would work. I would suggest a couple of options. If you have insurance, go to a professional speech therapist. This is their career and they’re really the best ones for this kind of thing. However, if you don’t have insurance or can’t afford it, you may want to look on a website like amazon.com or do a general search for speech therapy programs and try out one of the products best. Another thing that may help if you have the patience to do is use the same mateirals one would study to become a speach therapist. The tools they are learning, you could easily learn and use for yourself. Good luck!

Okay, so my Christmas present this year is Voice Lessons. They’re going to be from a friend of my mother’s who has had a fair amount of experience giving them. I’ll be starting next January.
My question is : what’s the best way to make a good impression?
I’m really shy and I tend to be extremely quiet. I also lack self-confidence, but I’d like to make a good impression instead of acting like this. Any advice?

The best way to make a good impression with any teacher is to be respectful and follow instructions. Show up on time. Do any homework she gives you.
As you progress with your voice lessons, you may find your self-confidence increasing and your shyness declining.
Good luck – and most of all, have a good time!

Thank you!

There are so many places it would be impossible to list them here. Try contacting Actors Equity:

http://www.actorsequity.org

There are a lot of musical theater people who play piano and teach voice. They can probably give you a list.

Another thing you can do is get a copy of "Backstage." You can pick it up at any newsstand in Manhattan and most of the boroughs. There are tons of voice/piano teachers listed in that publication.

Good luck.
